Salvation Is Not a Reward

This morning’s meeting at Regent Hall Corps was led by Commissioner Susan McMillan.

A stand-out line for me from this morning’s meeting was:

“Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done.”

This is a clear doctrinal principle—we cannot earn our salvation through works. Rather, we gain salvation through repenting, having faith in Jesus, and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us.

I know this. It is part of our faith. But that phrase really stood out, hit me between the eyes, and spoke to me in a very new, and very clear way.

Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done.

I don’t deserve salvation. I can never earn it. That’s grace!

Thank God for His amazing grace!

Praise in the Valleys I’m in a season of life where I can relate to the writer of the Psalms probably more than ever before. The week began with three amazing days of retreat—three days I’m incredibly grateful to have had before the subsequent drama and pain that have followed. As I often say to people: “ You couldn’t make my life up! ” The writer of the Psalms paints a vivid picture of the highs and lows of life. There are exciting, exhilarating mountaintop moments. There are desperately painful, relentless valley-bottom moments. There are times when the Psalmist cries out to God in distress, times when they cannot see or sense God’s presence at all. And yet, throughout the Psalms, God is always present—irrespective of whether the Psalmist can see God or not. Is Jesus Still in Our Homelessness Services? I read an article from The Salvation Army in Australia titled “Jesus is Still in Our Rehabs”. While the context and practicalities are different to the UK, the heart of the message is relatable. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard phrases like: “The Salvation Army isn’t what it used to be.” “Jesus is no longer in our Lifehouses.” “We are no longer a church – we’re just a social service provider.” If I’m being brutally honest, in some places, these statements are uncomfortably true. When our driving priority becomes winning new contracts and expanding service portfolio without first fully assessing the missional impact, we shouldn’t be surprised when the presence of Jesus feels absent.
